Rawwater product being used to seal metal pipes

Metal sealing solutions for critical assets

RW Seals uses reversible molten metal systems to seal leaks, recover defects and cut emissions on assets that are hard to take offline. Here is how our core solutions work for you.

Three complementary ways to solve difficult leaks

M3Spray

Molten alloy spray, applied directly against a flowing leak. Ideal for rapid response and complex assemblies.

M3Cast

Alloy casting around pipes, joints and flanges, ideal for fixtures and fittings causing circumferential leaks.

SF6 Leak Sealing

Service focused offering that uses M3 technology to cut SF6 emissions on live high voltage equipment.

M3Spray

A molten alloy spray that closes cracks, pinholes and complex leaks at low temperature. Ideal where access is restricted and shutdowns are difficult.

  • Seals liquid leaks on live systems in many cases
  • Well suited to complex geometries
  • Fully reversible by reheating and removing the alloy

M3Cast

Alloy casting around pipes, joints and flanges. Custom moulds are designed around real equipment, filled with low melting point alloy. moulds are removed and reused.

  • Best for pipe connections and flanges with gaseous leaks
  • Moulds can be designed to overcome complex constraints
  • Option for standardised moulds where space is less constrained

SF6 Leak Sealing

M3Cast equipment can be used to seal SF6 leaks at electricity substations while they are flowing.

  • Developed initially for small bore pipework
  • No disruption to operations
  • Significant emission savings

M3Spray or M3Cast, chosen for your asset

Different leak locations need different tools. We use two complementary M3 methods for SF6 applications.

Industrial Applicability

  • Electricity transmission

Electrification and net zero is driving the need for clean power, clean transmission and distribution, and a network which can meet demand now and in the future. As assets age, they leak. As demand grows, assets can’t go into unplanned outages – M3 is an ideal solution for sealing leaks while the leak is still flowing – the days of accepting a leak because you can’t get an outage are over!

Leak sealing avoids emissions and associated fines, extends asset life, supporting asset availability to meet demand.

Our support to the transmission sector is primarily sealing SF6 leaks, however we hope to expand into other leak types such as transformer oil leaks and beyond – get in touch with your needs today.

  • Nuclear decommissioning

Nuclear decommissioning focusses on the end of life of nuclear assets and their safe transition to a final state. Activities need to minimise replacement of parts or plants to avoid unnecessary cost. However, aging plants have the risk of leakage or defects forming. Therefore, testing M3 for various applications which could arise in complex nuclear decommissioning scenarios is part of defence in depth strategy – being prepared for what may be.

In nuclear decommissioning, the benefit of M3 is that it is quick to apply and M3 can be deployed remotely via a robot arm. These attributes mean that humans can be kept away from the operational area, something critical in this industry.

  • Defence

Platform availability in defence is more critical now than it has ever been. Unplanned maintenance stops are not an option during deployed operations. Battle damage repair in the field may need quick, short-term fixes to return to people and equipment to safety.

Our hand-held equipment is a good fit for these scenarios – allowing deployed operations to continue and battle damage repair to be undertaken by placing temporary repairs to leaks. The reversibility of M3 makes it ideal for this scenario until a planned, safe, full refurbishment can be made. At that time, M3 is simply removed and the alloy recovered and re-used.
Support infrastructure to the defence program is also under pressure to continue production to support the UK’s deterrent. Therefore, if a leak occurs, being able to repair such a leak during operations will enhance efficiency, and avoid loss of throughput.

With multiple value propositions in this sector, we are keen to work with partners to add value to the defence sector – please get in touch!

  • Water

Leakage targets for the water industry are challenging to achieve without doing something different. Leaks which are hard to access, or their repair disrupts customers for a long time, need a new approach.

Climate change is making leak reduction even harder. With more extreme weather, the water and wastewater infrastructure is pushed to the extreme, and dealing with leakage quickly stops waste entering the environment, and keeps water flowing to customers.

We are working with partners to explore this industry and prepare for reactive leak sealing, targeting a quick seal for a range of scenarios. Get in touch if you would like to be involved.

  • Hydrogen transport

The future energy mix includes hydrogen as a fuel. Transporting hydrogen through existing gas network will lead to more leakage due to the flow rate, compressor stations and molecule size of hydrogen. Replacing the entire gas network comes at a huge, unviable cost. M3 has the potential to upgrade the current network rather than lay new – the ultimate repair rather than replace!

We are aiming to complete feasibility work in this area shortly, if you have a pilot scenario please get in touch!

  • Industrial processing

Throughput and production targets are critical to the efficiency of this sector. Unplanned outages can cost businesses significant sums in lost revenue, cutting profitability. Stopping leaks without stopping throughput is the best of both worlds – safety and performance – this is exactly what M3 can do.

We have completed some feasibility work looking at chemical compatibility – get in touch with the types of leaks you want fixing, without interrupting production!

Seal now, keep future options open

All of our solutions use reversible metal seals. Alloys are chosen and deployed so they can be reheated and removed when equipment is upgraded or decommissioned. That means you recover performance and cut emissions today, without locking yourself into a temporary fix as a permanent modification.
